Polestar 4 to be EV brand’s biggest seller

Emerging Swedish-Chinese electric vehicle specialist Polestar is predicting its answer to the Tesla Model Y, the upcoming new Polestar 4 mid-size SUV, will become its top local seller after it’s released in Australia late in the third quarter of 2024.

The Polestar 4 is pitched in size between the just-updated Polestar 2 fastback and the large and luxurious Polestar 3 flagship SUV that debuts locally at the carsales Melbourne EV Show in September before going on sale here in the second quarter of 2024.

The all-new coupe-crossover will also sit in price between the Polestar 2 and 3, suggesting it could be close to the $100,000 mark at launch.

The Polestar 2 tops out at $85,400, while the Polestar 3 currently starts at $132,900, although carsales understands a cheaper entry-level model might be announced closer to launch.

Overseas, indicative pricing for Polestar 4 has been given as 60,000 Euros ($A100,410), $US60,000 ($A92,600) and 55,000 British pounds ($A107,500). More encouragingly, it has gone on sale in China – where it is built – with a starting price equivalent to $A74,400.

If it arrives with a circa-$100K starting price, the Polestar 4 would be a lot more expensive than the vehicle nominated as its natural competitor, the Tesla Model Y, which is priced between $69,300 and $98,855 plus ORCs, and so far this year is Australia’s top-selling EV and medium SUV.

But as Polestar Automotive Australia chief Samantha Johnson made clear at last week’s Polestar 2 launch, Tesla isn’t in the luxury league she wants to compete in.

Instead, the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz EQB, Genesis GV60 and incoming Audi Q4 e-tron shape as its competition.

“Polestar 4 is going to be our most popular seller,” Johnson confirmed.

“With the value proposition, it is going to be very popular.

“You see some of the other EV SUVs that have come into the market in that mid-range – they are hugely popular, with very high volumes.

“Polestar 4 is going to bring us to a next level.”

The Polestar 2 is the EV brand’s only model at the moment and is on track to sell 3000 examples in Australia in 2024.

Johnson said that after the Polestar 4 was launched the Polestar 2 would occupy the number two sales position ahead of the Polestar 3.

In making her prediction, Johnson is aligning with Polestar’s global boss Thomas Ingenlath.

The Polestar 4 is described as an SUV coupe by its designers and is officially reported by the company as measuring up 4839mm long, 2139mm wide and 1544mm tall.

The first Polestar based on parent Geely’s SEA architecture, the 4 will be offered with the choice of a single- or dual-motor drivetrain powered by a big 102kWh lithium-ion battery.

The Long Range Single Motor will cover up to 600km (WLTP) on a single charge, says Polestar. Its permanent magnet synchronous motor is mounted to the rear axle and outputs 200kW/343Nm, resulting in a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 180km/h.

The flagship all-wheel drive Long Range Dual Motor Polestar 4 produces 400kW/686Nm, accelerates to 100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds and has a claimed driving range of 560km.
